A wine cellar is a wine storage room for wines that are in barrels or bottles and is normally built underground. A wine cellar has to have a favorable environment to ensure that the wine stored there remains in its fresh state even after many years. This means that the temperature and humidity of the cellar have to be regulated at levels that will not affect the quality of the wine. Wine cellars built above the ground are known as wine rooms while those that have capacity for 500 or fewer bottles are known as wine closets. The main purpose of building a wine cellar is to protect the wine from environmental factors that will compromise the quality such as light and high temperatures. Wine is a perishable food product that should be protected from fluctuating temperatures, heat and light as well as vibrations and light. With proper storage, wine not only maintains its freshness but also improves on the quality of its aroma, complexity and flavor.

For a wine cellar to be rated as good, it should be able to keep the wine in its original freshness and also improve its quality. 5-18 °C is the right temperature in a good wine cellar with variations also should be avoided. In case the temperature goes high or low, it should not vary by more than 10 °C. The French stored their wines in caves of these temperatures and therefore people knew that those were the correct temperatures for wine cellars. When the temperature of a wine cellar is too high, the wine will mature faster than it should and therefore miss out on some steps that give it the qualities of a well matured wine. If a wine has matured too fast, it will taste like vinegar as opposed to regular wines that have a sweet and savory taste.

A wine cellar can be actively cooled or passively cooled. When using active cooling systems in a wine cellar, proper insulation should be done by a professional. These are special wine cooling systems that have to be installed to ensure that the temperature and humidity are maintained at the correct levels. Most people do not use this type of cooling system unless the weather is too hot. Areas that are naturally very cools are the best areas to have a passively cooled wine cellar. Passive cooling systems do not require any energy to operate and are normally in the basement of a house. They are therefore cheaper albeit unreliable sometimes.

The most important part of wine tasting is the shape of the wine glasses. Wine glasses create the balance of flavor needed to fully appreciate the tasting experience. A wine glass was made with the shape they have for very specific reasons.

Red wine glasses all consist of these three components: base, shorter stem, and a wide bowl and mouth. The bowl is shaped to create the bouquet of the wine to enhance the flavor. The mouth of the red wine glass is wide so that it allows you to sip the wine allowing you to taste it at the front of your palette.

Red wine glasses use the surface area of the large bowl to oxygenate and evaporate the wine allowing for a much bolder aroma. Red wine is known for its strong and bold taste. The large bowl is also used to grasp the glass by which helps keep red wine at the desired temperature, room temperature.

White wine glasses have the same structure as red wine glasses consisting of a base, stem and bowl. The major difference between the two is that the white wine glass bowl is much narrower and taller which helps to keep the delicate bouquet held together. Also, the white wine glass has a taller stem than the red wine glass which provides a place to hold the glass so as not to warm the wine because white wine should be served chilled.

The mouth of white wine glasses is narrow providing for the wine to be tossed onto the back of the palette by making you tilt your head back in order to drink it. The region of the mouth where you taste the wine is crucial to the overall experience.

Another type of wine that requires its own glass is Champagne. A flute is the type of glass used for champagne. Flute wine glasses have a very tall and narrow bowl, much more narrower than a white wine glass, and this helps to maintain the bubbles for a long time.

Wine glasses are very important on more than one level and are not just for holding your wine but for perfecting the taste of the wine as well. Wine should always be paired with its perfect wine glass in order to experience wine tasting to the fullest. Something else you can do with wine is to pair it with the perfect food.

The perfect food to pair with white wine is seafood. Chocolate and red meat pair wonderfully with red wine. Testing out food and wine combinations to find the perfect pairing is always acceptable as long as you remember to use the right wine glasses!

Beginner's Guide To Purchasing Wine

Purchasing wine is what we'll be focusing on in this installment of our wine guide...

Supermarkets are the biggest suppliers of wine to consumers; it's availability next to everday items such as bread and milk making it an impulse buy on many a shopping trip. It's probably through a supermarket that many of us purchase our first few bottles of wine and, attracted by low prices, special offers, and familiar labels, we keep going back for more.

However, the average supermarket doesn't offer much in terms of range or quality. The country of origin may be different, the labels may be different, even the prices may be slightly different, but the wines rapidly begin to all taste the same. The reason for this being that they're made in the winery, not the vineyard, to recipes specified by the supermarkets.

Wine merchants, whether they be national or regional chains, are a much better option. Relying on these for the supply of some of your wine will result in a great deal more pleasure than shopping only at the supermarket. You'll be able to find lesser known, higher quality wines. Their basic wines are still priced competitively with supermarkets; this being made possible by their considerable buying power.

Small independent merchants also have much too offer. In this type of outlet you will usually receive excellent and knowledgeable service and advice. It's normal for the employees to have tasted the wines on sale, and so you can ask their opinion on any that interest you. None of this happens in your local supermarket.

Mail order and the internet are another two wine buying options to consider. Why limit yourself to a small, familiar range encountered on the weekly shopping trip when you can have access to tens of thousands of wines from these sources? Delivery normally takes just a few days and postage charges are more than reasonable. It's an increasingly popular way to purchase wine.

Another, lesser used, option is to visit the winemakers and buy directly from them. Meeting the people responsible for the wine and seeing first hand the processes involved in its making is invaluable; no wine review or wine label could possibly be as informative. Most wine producers, be they in Germany, France, Australia or anywhere else, will usually have some facilities to allow visitors to taste their produce. Not only will you be able to taste a multitude if wines, they'll also be available to you at discounted prices.
