The movie serves as an excellent satire of modern day Hollywood culture. Before the movie begins, we're treated to a series of fake commercials which provide some of the biggest laughs of the movie. When they get taken out into the jungle for some hardcore training to get into character, they wind up getting more than they bargained for, being put into a situation where they're actually being shot at and forced to rely on each other to survive.

The theme of the film is one of honesty, the movie is about phoniness and sincerity, and all of the characters have to come to terms with who they are in life. While it's a comedy, you find yourself actually rooting for these characters to see things through, to succeed in their internal struggles and find out who they are and their place in the universe.

It's funny, too, of course, it's not just character development and nothing else, but the idea is to put together a film that is funny, dramatic, exciting and touching all at once, so all of the characters do get developed in full, and much more deeply than you might expect from a comedy, and especially one that you'd see from Ben Stiller.

What makes these action scenes interesting is the fact that, when the characters finally come face to face with the badguys, they're not carrying real guns, but prop automatic rifles, so they're only firing blanks while the other side of the gunfight is firing live rounds. This provides a whole new dynamic to the concept of the movie shootout unlike anything we've ever seen in an action flick before.

While watching the movie, look out for one of the greatest film cameos ever. You won't be able to figure it out right away, and don't let anyone spoil it for you. Once you figure out who it is, it's the biggest laugh of the film.

So the movie is funny, moving, dramatic, exciting and really well made. Yes, Ben Stiller has been striking out in recent years, but this movie more than makes up for all of his flops. It was directed by Billy Wilder who made many other classic movies and its name provides the basis for its setting. The title is the famous Boulevard in Los Angeles and the playground of the rich and famous movie stars.

Lead man William Holden is the little know screenplay writer and Norma Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson is the faded, jaded movie star with a forgotten career.

The plot centers around Holden in character as Joe Gillis, a young screenplay writer who is down on his luck. He owes money and has dreams of grandeur, which his pay check can not compete with. He meets Norma Desmond, a now aging star of the silent screen, and given his limited options he agrees to write a screenplay for her to relaunch her career.

Norma falls in love with Joe and Joe falls in love with her money and through this mutually convenient situation they coexist. He tries to leave eventually, but she attempts suicide and manages to coax him back.

She thinks that she can be a successful actress again, but the years have not been kind and she is trying to rise in an industry that rewards youth and beauty over everything else.

Joe is writing another script with another actress and he develops an attraction to her. He tells Norma that he is leaving and she prevents this by firing a single shot and killing him dead in her swimming pool.

Her last line, often quoted is "I'm ready for my close up" showing how her mentally unstable mind is likening the events to being in a film and distorting what is actually happening.

This is a tragic movie and reveals the inner darkness and corruption in the film industry. People become dispensable commodities and the film is testament to an actress with a mental illness who cannot accept that her youth and beauty are behind her.

Norma's character is pitiful and self deluded and it is hard not to feel sympathy for her. The film industry has made her into a star, but now she is forgotten by many and lives a reclusive life in her mansion on Sunset Boulevard.

The servants she has treat her gently and pander to her need to look youthful. In this day and age of botox and plastic surgery the film is an uncomfortable reminder that there are some things that can't be bought.

Sunset Boulevard is suitable for all ages and is a thought provoking look at the lives of the rich and famous. Desmond's lavish mansion, swimming pool and servants are things that are associated with making it in life, but her mental instability arising from her lost youth makes all these material possessions meaningless.

Gillis is greedy and heartless and shows how people can exploit others to get what they want. He claims that he can take Leonard to the second killer, a drug dealing punk named Jimmy, so that he can exact his revenge. What the audience learns later, is that Jimmy had nothing to do with Lenny's wife. And Teddy feeds Lenny a story about having already found the other killer a year ago.

Others are introduced into the story, and more important facts are brought into play. Through the course of the film you presumably learn the identity of the second killer and get a front row seat to watch Leonard exact his revenge. This film is over run with quality performances that made the production powerful. Performances like that of Guy Pearce who played Leonard Shelby and Joe Pantaliano who played Teddy Gammel.

Pro wrestling has been a popular part of American entertainment culture for nearly a century, but until now has been depicted very poorly in the movies. 1962' 'Requiem for a Heavyweight' may be the best wrestling movie ever made until now almost by default. Requiem starred Anthony Quinn as an aging boxer who is at the end of his career and running out of options. After a final knockout he turns to the pro wrestling out of necessity. The unique moral ambiguity of pro wrestling is completely foreign to Quinn's character (I fought 111 fights and never took a dive") and is at the crux of the films dramatic tension.

While Requiem is certainly a great film with some excellent performances by Quinn and Jackie Gleason (one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood history) along with a whos who of prizefighting greats including Ali, Willie Pep, Jack Dempsey and Barney Ross and even an appearance by famed wrestler Haystacks Calhoun, it is at its core a boxing film. Pro wrestling is portrayed as the nadir of an over the hill pugilists decline, which has historical precedent (Joe Louis most notably) but does nothing to explain the phenomenon itself.

Pro wrestling has been featured in a lot of other movies"though never well. There have been a few documentaries of merit (Beyond the Mat), some low budget films more interesting for their classic footage than anything else (I Like To Hurt People) and a ton of bad movies of varying degrees of unwatchability. Ill admit to having a soft spot for All the Marbles due to Peter Falk and its portrayal of a bizarro-world sports universe where womens pro wrestling is a big deal, but thats the only other wrestling film worthy of specific mention.

In the starring role of Randy The Ram Robinson, Rourke turns in a performance that critics have compared to Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, Paul Newman in The Hustler, and Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull. For a wrestling fan, its even more impressive due to his in-ring work. With the exception of a couple of extremely high risk spots, Rourke did all of his own wrestling and took all of the bumps himself. Its unfortunate that the Oscar voters couldnt see past their disdain for the subject matter to give Rourke the Best Actor award he so obviously deserved.

Aronofsky had a difficult task in creating an honest portrayal of professional wrestling. Perhaps the most amazing thing about The Wrestler is how well it succeeds on both levels, which likely accounts for the effusive praise it has garnered from film geeks who wouldnt know a headlock from a padlock as well as pro wrestling enthusiasts.

Thats what makes Rourkes performance so amazing and The Wrestler such a great film"it simultaneously depicts pro wrestling at its best and worst and gets them both right. It accurately depicts the brutal downside of a sometime unforgiving profession, but also demonstrates the seductive appeal that keeps both the 'workers' and fans captivated.
