A surgeon and war veteran, Dr. Watson has been an able stalwart to Holmes. In the movie he has been portrayed as a strong ally to Holmes rather than a frivolous partner as portrayed in some of the older movies.

Though Law wasn't the original choice for the role but still he was deemed as a better choice than others.

The movie in total was nominated for two Oscars in all the categories, one for the original score in a motion picture while the other was for achievement in art direction. Though didn't win any award here it was widely appreciated. At the same time it did win several awards in other places. Hans Zimmer who has also composed the music for The Dark Night was asked to score music for this too.
