A Short History Of The Social Network

Before the dawn of history, a few cavemen got together and decided to cooperate for their mutual benefit and safety from the dangers the world held for them. This was the beginning of the history of social networking. As civilization developed, families bonded together into tribes for the same purpose and then into villages, cities and countries – each stage was a development of the social network. Within these evolving social structures smaller groups of guilds, fraternities and brotherhoods – that exist today in the form of Freemasons, Rotarians and others – with more closely aligned interests came into being.

Everything changed with the arrival of the internet when physical boundaries for networking disappeared. Modern networking, as we know it, began in the early part of the 1980s with the creation of Bulletin Board Services (BBS). These BBS were operated by hobbyists who used them to promote their own interests and agendas. These crude (by today’s standards) sites with only text were slow and not easy to access as most people had only dial up connections at that time but the forums they offered were the first networking sites.

Around the time of the BBS, a service called CompuServe also came into being; but it was aimed at business users who could share files and access news on it. CompuServe had one great innovation – it allowed users to send electronic messages to one another – the beginnings of easily accessed email. CompuServe became very popular and soon outgrew the limited business applications and went into the public domain, providing access to thousands of forums on a range of subjects to any who had a modem and phone line. CompuServe was soon overtaken by America Online (AOL) that allowed member to create their own communities and even had member profiles that could be searched.

Soon after AOL came Yahoo with a host of more user friendly communications and networking options but it was the advent of a site called Classmates.com that introduced social networking as we know it today. Classmates.com allowed for not just communities, but for locating long lost school friends and establishing online contact with them. The concept caught on rapidly and the next stage was subject or demographic specific networking services like AsianAvenues.com that promoted networking among people with Asian interests and origins. From here it was only a matter of time before the concept grew into large completely open social networking sites that allowed millions of members to search, find and link up with both old friends and business associates as well as new ones that could be met online. The advent of Twitter that allows instantaneous online communications between those who “tweet” and their “followers” is only the latest development in social networking history and what may be around the cornet could surprise us all.

I live in a small metropolitan area with only about 110,000 people. And it seems even smaller than that.

I?ve been doing business in this community for over 20 years. I?ve worked in non-profits, sales, publishing, printing, construction and now Internet publishing.

Very little of my business is now local. But I often run into people from previous business relationships. Like me, many of these people are in different businesses?some in different careers altogether.

It struck me how much my present business relationships have to do with my previous ones. I?ve found it easy to recreate rapport and establish trust with folks I?ve had good dealings with before. When I know someone and have confidence in their word, doing business with them becomes easier.

I strive to have an excellent relationship with everyone. It doesn?t seem possible all the time, but it?s worth striving for nonetheless.

Marketing gurus recommend that we should be mindful of the lifetime value of a customer?to look not only at the profit from an initial sale. It?s good advice. And I would take it a step further: Be mindful of the lifetime value of a RELATIONSHIP?not just a customer.

One of the key concepts we talked about at a recent World Class Business Conference was the importance of relationships in business. I went so far as to say that business is really a network of communication against a background of relationships.

And it?s not just relationships with customers?it?s with suppliers, coworkers, stakeholders?even competitors.

As some of my recent encounters have pointed out, some relationships are completely reversed from what they used to be. Customers can now be employers. Competitors can now be customers. Coworkers may now be bosses.

Today, with the Internet, our business world becomes even smaller. We do business with people around the world, but it?s really still a fairly small community. As I talk with other entrepreneurs online, we seem to know many of the same people.

In a few years, we may each be doing something a bit different. And the relationships we have and build today will serve us in the future in direct proportion to the quality and integrity we create.

It?s important that we cultivate and nurture our relationships. Being honest, playing win-win and treating people fairly isn?t just a moral thing to do?it?s good business?now, and in the future.
